remarketing lists inherit the quality of whatever data is building them.
if your purchase event is double-firing, your "purchasers" list contains everyone who hit the thank-you page twice. if your "add to cart" event is firing on page view instead of button click, your cart abandoner list is mostly people who never touched the cart.
these audiences then feed into smart bidding as signals. the algorithm learns from them. if the lists are dirty, the learning is wrong.
three ways this shows up:
RLSA campaigns underperform despite warm audiences
the audience looks right on paper but the members don't convert. usually because the list was built on an imprecise event.
similar audiences do not perform
Google's similar audiences (now customer match and smart signals) learn from your existing lists. if those lists are noisy, the similar audience is noisy.
PMax burns budget on irrelevant users
PMax uses your conversion history to define its audience signals. if the conversion history includes noise, it finds more people like the noise.
the check: in Google Ads, go to Tools, then Audience Manager, then Your data segments. click into any segment built on website data. look at the event that's populating it. confirm that event matches what you actually want the list to represent.
